Chagoi Koi 23.62 inch For Sale

Chagoi Koi 23.62 inch, Chagoi (Chah’-goy), Chagoi KoiIf you want a fish with personality, look no further than the basic Chagoi. You’ll discover this pet is probably more intelligent than other koi in your pond too. It is almost universally agreed to be the friendliest of the koi classifications because it is the most aggressive at feeding time and almost always the first fish to become hand-tame. For this reason, the Chagoi is sometimes purchased solely for the purposes of taming the rest of a group, and not for its color. Once one fish starts eating from your hand, it’s not hard to bring the rest about.

The Chagoi is basically a brown koi, however a brown koi is not necessarily a Chagoi. Within that distinction, there are levels of quality and the discovery of valuable traits. If the basic Chagoi is a brown koi, what about the different shades of brown? Let’s discuss these and the other traits that make a “good” Chagoi.

Physical characteristics: first, the fish should be big. Now, this doesn’t apply to the young fish, but you should be able to tell that the fish has been fat and robust all its life. As a young fish it should be an aggressive eater and it should be larger than all the other fish of the same age. As an adult, a Chagoi is prized most highly if it fulfills a destiny of great size – as much as 40 inches or more. That’s a big koi by any standard.

The fish should be blocky in its body shape. The base of the tail (knuckle) should be thick and fat. The head and shoulders should be broad, and no part of the fish should be slender or streamlined. The pectorals should be large and paddle shaped, and there should be no splits in the fins or the dorsal fin. And the eyes of a Chagoi should be active and bright, with the corneas being crystal clear.

Let’s also consider the color and pattern. There are two patterns of Chagoi – “with fukurin” and “without fukurin.” Fukurin (foo’-kure-in) is when each scale is highlighted with a black edging, giving the fish a “fishnet” pattern over the brown coloration. This may be missing in scaleless Chagois and in some of the Chagoi colors. Personal preference will dictate which style you desire.

With or without fukurin, the more “lined up” the scales are, the better the fish. For example, let’s say you have two Chagoi of exactly the same color and size. Both are chunky through the body and have large paddle-like pectoral fins. To determine the difference between the two, you would look at the alignment of the scales. If the rows were nice and straight like a corncob, then the fish with the straightest, most uniform rows would be awarded the point for scale pattern.

Koi Care Guide – Six things to know about your koi

  • Experience Level: Intermediate
  • Size: Koi grow up to 36 inches (91 cm) long
  • Lifespan: They can live for more than 50 years and thrive in a wide range of water temperatures
  • Temperament: They are generally peaceful but may pick on slower fish
  • Origin: They’re a type of carp native to Japan
  • Did You Know: Koi can learn to recognize and take food from their pet parents

How do I set up my koi’s aquarium?

  • Koi grow quickly and get very large. Keep mature koi in an outdoor pond of at least 3 feet deep, with at least 50 gallons of water per fish.
  • Young koi can be kept indoors in an aquarium of at least 29 gallons.
  • Put the aquarium in a quiet area out of direct sunlight and drafts.
  • Cover the aquarium with a hood to reduce evaporation and splashing and to keep fish from leaping out.
  • To transfer new koi to the aquarium, float them in the water inside their bag for about 10 minutes so they can acclimate to the new water temperature.
  • If you’re introducing koi to an existing school in an aquarium or pond, quarantine the new fish in a separate body of water for 2 to 4 weeks to be sure they are healthy.
  • On moving day, use a net to transfer the koi so old water doesn’t mingle with new water.
  • Whether they live indoors or outdoors, add no more than 3 new koi at a time.

Heat & light

Outdoor koi are hardy and will hibernate under ice in winter as long as their pond is deep enough to not freeze completely. (They won’t survive in solid ice.)

Your koi’s pond should be partially shaded.

Indoor koi prefer water between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Install a light inside an indoor aquarium to illuminate it for 8 to 12 hours a day.

Water temperature

Koi are pretty temperature-resistant— they can even hibernate under ice in winter. Just be sure your pond is at least three feet deep— otherwise, it could freeze solid, and koi aren’t that tough. When they live indoors, koi prefer cool water—between 65 and 75 degrees F (18 to 24 C).

How do I keep my koi healthy?

If your outdoor koi don’t seem to be eating in the winter, don’t worry; it’s normal for them to stop eating at temperatures below 40 F. Be sure to contact a veterinarian if you notice any of these symptoms:

  • Unusual swimming pattern
  • Thinness or decreased appetite
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Inflamed or discolored skin or fins
  • Fins clamped to sides of body
  • Scraping body on rocks (flashing)
