Description

Peppermint Angelfish For Sale

Peppermint Angelfish, Often referred to as “The Holy Grail” of marine melek balığı by hobbyists and enthusiasts, the Peppermint Angelfish (Paracentropyge boylei), has been found in the deep waters of the Cook Islands. For those new to the quest for this elusive Pomacanthid, you need to understand its significance in the hobby and why this denizen of the South Pacific commands such a high price.

The Peppermint Angel is a more recent discovery, as the Türler name indicates, it was discovered by Charles (Chip) Boyle. Most often found at depths of 300 to 400 feet, it takes a specially trained diver with rebreather equipment just to descend to such depths to avoid succumbing to the bends, known as DCS (decompression sickness). Once divers do reach the required depth, their time is limited, and they have the ensuing challenge of trying to capture and collect this cryptic angel in deep waters that only limited light reaches. Not to mention, Peppermint Angels are not swimming out and about in the water column, they reside in rocky caves and coral structures, so their accessibility is extremely limited. Once a Peppermint Angel is collected it must be handled with the utmost care and attention to ensure it is properly decompressed as it transitions from the depths to the surface.

Paracentyropyge boylei – The Holy Grail – Peppermint Angelfish

As we all know, there are thousands of different species of fish available in the aquarium trade, and we all have our favorites. There is no denying, however, that the Peppermint Angelfish, Paracentyropyge boylei, is by far one of the most highly sought after reef fish this hobby has ever seen. As we recently reported, an epic number of these beautiful angels were being held at BlueHarbor in Osaka, Japan.  Since then, several of the highly coveted boyleis have been shipped around the world to various wholesalers, retailers and high-end fish collectors.

Peppermint Angels are very deep water fish, so they require to be kept in tanks with cooler water than typical home tanks. Also Peppermint Angelfish must be kept in tanks with lots of rock work and caves that they can take shelter from the strong lighting found in our tanks. Since Peppermint Angels are so rare and expensive, only the most expert of aquarists should even attempt to care for one.

Peppermint Angelfish are omnivores and require a diet that is rich in both meaty and green foods. Foods like spirulina, high quality frozen foods, mysis and brine shrimp, live feeder shrimp and high quality flake and pellet foods should keep your Peppermint Angelfish healthy and thriving.

Peppermint Angelfish reach a maximum adult size of around 3 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 55 gallons. Peppermint Angelfish are semi-aggressive fish, but should not bother most other fish and inverts in your tank. Like other pygmy angels, Peppermint Angelfish will sometimes nip at some hard and soft corals. So please only add a Peppermint Angelfish to your reef tank under caution.
